I Thought I Could Have Yesterday Once More
Starving as mom and I just arrived at the Logan Circle in Washington D.C., we headed out of the apartment searching for places that did not close for a break at 4 pm on a Thursday afternoon. With the help of Yelp, we decided on our lunch-dinner at Logan Tavern, a spacious and vintage gastropub.
Based on the first comment for Logan Tavern on Yelp, "The Ginger Calamari is a must-try", we went for it without hesitation.
The portion was hearty for an appetizer. Mom and I were surprised to see two pairs of chopsticks next to the plate, which reminds me of the bistro restaurants I had fun in. (At first we suspected whether the presence of chopsticks was because the server noticed our speaking Asian language, but later when we saw our neighbors trying to fetch the calamari rings with the challenging chopsticks, I felt relieved.)
Before finishing up our first bite, neither of us could hold back our approbation toward these sophisticated calamari rings. Unlike the normal crispy ones which are wrapped by the heavy tight flour, these are soft and tender -- with light flour coating on, they turned jauntily crispy but not causing cracking noises in our mouths. The sweet sauce, accompanied by fresh purple cabbage slices in the plate, brought the refreshing Asian taste to the table. It was so distinct from what we had in the past: calamaris were not unhealthy, dry and tough anymore!
The next day we went back with my DSLR in hand in order to take a better picture of this dish, only to find that this time, the chef made all mediocre calls. Our expectation led us to a downfall. I don't think I need to explain too much -- please see the second picture.
